Dog Training Jobs – Animal Lovers Wanted

I have yet to meet a person who works with dogs and does not find it fulfilling.

A majority of people who are employed in dog training jobs are animal lovers. They find satisfaction from working with and helping dogs, even if work can be physically and emotionally challenging.

It would come as a surprise to some that dog training jobs are wide-ranging. Admittedly the first thought that comes to mind when one mentions dog training is the dog that is taught to perform tricks in shows. This however is just the tip of the iceberg, as dogs are trained for numerous reasons not just for entertainment.  Trainers teach dogs for performance, security, obedience, search and rescue or assisting people with disabilities. Because of the diversity of a trained dog’s function, trainers also have career opportunities in government institutions, private companies, non-government organizations, the academe and even private practice.

How then can one be hired for dog training jobs? After securing a high school diploma or GED equivalent becoming a dog trainer then becomes a two step process. One must first attend a school for dog trainers or dog care.  These institutions teach dog behavior, psychology, training methodology and theory, pet care, as well as the history of animal training. There are also subjects within the course that cater to the clients or owners of the dogs. The courses about hosting as well as designing dog training courses for clients or dog owners also contribute to the overall professionalism of the occupation. After all part of training dogs is the up-training or educating of their owners. More contemporary schools seeing the commercial field of dog training jobs opening more and more in recent years has also added business management to their curriculum.

A good education however is only half the battle. In order to be a professional dog trainer and to qualify for dog training jobs a graduate must thru a respected national organization complete a recognized trainer certification.  Although there are several organizations who certify dog trainers, the Certification Council for Professional Dog trainers is possibly the most well respected. This organization standardized dog trainer certification and the Certified Pet Dog Trainer credential it awards is in high demand.
The academic requirements aside dog trainers and caretakers also need to pass the non-academic side that this field requires. Dog trainers also need to have aside from an innate love for animals, patience, sensitivity, and problem solving ability. This occupation may not be the easiest of roads to take, but the right path seldom is.
